I actually have a real website...
Tangentbot
[info]tangentbot
...with a blog! Check it out! I've actually postponed my music writing to put this thing together, and now that I can start writing music again this will be the place to hear it! I'm also going to try and sell (gasp!) some CDs (remember those?), maybe some t-shirts... we'll see. it's all a big work in progress. If nothing else, I'll post pictures of headphones and kimchee recipes and complain about mass transit in Seattle. You love it!

So the “Song A Week” thing was partly a success; I now know my ability to write music during what was one of my most chaotic years. I failed at producing one song per week though, topping out at 42 complete songs and around 15 incomplete foundations that should eventually become songs. Between transitioning through 3 jobs, traveling for almost a month to the other side of the world and juggling all the other hobbies and activities that I like, I’d say it was close enough.

Now, onto a new year.

I recently got a new job in the company I was contracted for (The Cobalt Group) as a “Web Content Specialist” It is a lot of fun so far, and I get to work 6-2:30, which rocks. I never really thought I’d work in the tech industry – without a degree in anything it just didn’t seem like an option. I get tons of benefits and perks, which are unnecessary but welcome, as I already like my job.

New Year’s Eve party at Chris and Carrie’s was a lot of fun. I ate mysterious dips and drank a Cosmopolitan and a White Russian. There were more people this year, it seemed, and it didn’t end up turning into a DS party (even though we were all armed and ready).

I got presents for Christmas… good ones. I think my “highlight” gift would be the MASH boxed set, Martinis and Medicine. I also got a ton of Tom Waits CDs, a handmade pillow from my best friend Leah, The Big Lebowski, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, robot stuff…. Tons of crap. It was fun.

My major goal this year would be paying off our debt, which shouldn’t take long. Coupled with that, I’ve chosen three things which will be my focus for the year: Learning Japanese, Cooking Japanese Food and Writing Music.

Speaking of writing music, I've been dabbling in what will probably end up being my primary piece of audio software: Reason 3.0. This program is amazing, not only functionally, but aesthetically, and the stuff I've heard so far impresses me more then any other music software I've played with. We shall see.

I want to talk about my new website, a tangentbot dot com makeover, our next trip to Japan, the food I've been making and the new restaurants I've found, but it will have to wait.

beetle triumphant

[info]tangentbot
this one is called beetle triumphant and it has all those drums and that bass that you kids love so much. I made sukiyaki tonight and it was YUMMY! And, it's pronounced "skee-yaki", so now you'll stop making a fool out of yourself at your neighborhood Japanese restaurant.

...and don't rub your Gorram chopsticks together, you moran, that's like calling the sushi chef a cheap bastard! And don't use so much shoyu and wasabi... ok, I'm done.

i wanted to talk some...

[info]tangentbot
I'm going to rant a little bit. I KNOW 43Folders is a great site, there's lots of good info to be had there, lifehacks, productivity, blah blah... Merlin Mann is so Mac-centric. I'm a Gentoo linux user first, and I have a windows box to write music on, and I've always considered Macs a "rich kid toy". They are shiny, easy to use, and they cost much more than a standard PC. Sure, they (guessing?)probably do a marginally better job at graphics rendering, and they use them in video editing, but come on. Macs, like iPods, are primarily college kid jewelry. (Hardcore Mac power-users probably despise that image too...)

He (Mr. Mann) also seems to think (according to a recent post) that his readership is entirely Mac and (misguided) Windows users. If he focused more on productivity and a bit less on how k-rad f'ing badass Macs are, I may, as a LINUX user, be tempted to stick around and read on... but as of now, it grows weary...

Secondly, I finally found myself in the possession of Reason 3.0, and talk about badass! I don't even know what to say, this program is so awesome... my little O2 M-Audio MIDI controller is getting a workout from it too...

Skaletracker
Tangentbot
[info]tangentbot
I've been using Skaletracker for a few days now and I love it. It is mapped just like FT2, accepts MIDI/VSTi/ASIO, and sounds great. It has an on-demand file browser just like fasttracker and it is slick as hell. My only complaint is the little title screen that you have to wait for, but other then that it rocks. My search is finally (hopefully) over.

Oh, P.S. - Don't expect it to play your old XM files spot on... I couldn't care less, as I've transferred my XMs to WAV anyway, and all the stuff I'm writing on Skale will be new... but just a warning, it effs up portamento and stuff.

milkytracker is crap
Tangentbot
[info]tangentbot
I am a hardcore Fasttracker 2 fan way back since 1996 (That's eleven years ago, kids!). Trouble (benefit?) is, it will only run in native DOS, not even fakeDOS that XP uses, nor linux. There are several win32 substitutes, and some decent linux trackers, and I have used them all. NOTHING works for me like FT2. I even set up a DOS box just to run it!

Anyway, I recently heard about Milkytracker and I flipped out. They were claiming they had an FT2 clone. So I tried it out, thinking "Wow, I can have all my audio software on one machine finally!". Not so. When you click the icon, it throws a ridiculous graphic up that you have to look at for 2 seconds. You are then treated to a squatty window with a completely different layout. I tried to browse my samples and instruments, and I find I have to load a file before I hear it. In FT2, you could preview instantly, which lets you fly through your thousands of samples quickly to find the one you want. The whole program crashed without warning when I tried to open a different directory. FT2 at least (when you figure out how to crash it...) saves a backup of whatever you are in the middle of called BACKUP.XM. I'll just jump to the worst part of this "FT2 clone" experience... YOU IDIOTS REMAPPED THE KEY LAYOUT!

Now, since I've been tracking on the same piece of software for eleven years, naturally I can maneuver the keyboard in my sleep. The play is always Ctrl. The stop is always Space. If you change this crap, I have to re-learn a different program. Why would I do that when I am an expert at this one?

Somebody tell me when a real FT2 clone is released, like a 1:1 copy that runs on Linux or winXP. Until then, time to fire up my win98 lite box :)

Excuse
Tangentbot
[info]tangentbot
This is my excuse. It is my excuse for not yet releasing last week`s Song Of The Week. I got my laptop(tangerine orange) in the mail, and I`ve been busy formatting it for musical purposes. I just picked up a bunch of stuff tonight also, so I`ve kept busy. I bought a PS/2 to USB adapter, so I can use my KVM switch with the laptop, and a 4 port USB hub so I can connect my digital camera, printer, midi controller and any sound modules I plan on picking up in the future.

I also bought two excellent books, Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity by David Allen, and Build Your Own Website The Right Way Using HTML & CSS by Ian Lloyd. And lastly, I FINALLY picked up Disc 7 of Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex (the metal box with a rad t-shirt).

So, back to the song I need to finish; oh yes, I started writing it last week, but I was derailed and sidetracked and a whole slew of locomotive terminology was applied to my self-imposed situation. But I WILL bring you guys TWO songs this week. Tomorrow, maybe. Or possibly Thursday.

Sunday is a day of rest...

New update over at the Pacific Northwest Diner Blog. It is hot today, but not like yesterday. Yesterday was awful, and hopefully it will cool down and rain in the near future.

We ate at a diner in Des Moines this morning, to be reviewed by "Eggs". Also, Mike H. and I played Mariokart DS (Mike's first time playing multiplayer on his DS) so that was fun. Oh, and I got to see two episodes of the newest Ren & Stimpy, "The Altruists" and "Stimpys Pregnant". Beautiful and brilliant stuff, soon to be added to my DVD wishlist.

So today is for cleaning, cooking, and not spending any money. I have to organize files across two computers, and build a workable database, so that will consume a chunk of time. I'm also 2/3ds of the way through the Foundation trilogy by Asimov, and it is awesome sauce. That's it for now!
